YVR CELEBRATES 75 YEARS

After first opening its doors in 1931, Vancouver International Airport (YVR) has gone on to become the second largest international passenger gateway on the west coast of North America, and Canada's second busiest airport.

The airport was built after a slight by Charles Lindbergh, following his solo, non-stop, trans-Atlantic flight in 1927. During his North American victory tour, he declined an offer to visit Vancouver declaring, "There is no fit field to land on."

Since then, YVR has forged ahead, serving millions of passengers and winning many awards in the process. And the facility has big plans for the future too. Currently undergoing construction projects that will total $1 billion CAD by 2010, plans include the following:

• International Terminal Wing - The largest project is a $420 million CAD, nine-gate addition to the International Terminal. Phase one, scheduled to open in spring 2007, will add four gates, two of which will accommodate the new Airbus A380. The second phase, an additional five gates, will be needed by 2010. The new wing will include a large aquarium showcasing indigenous marine life, a jellyfish tank and a stream running through the centre of the building.

• Rapid Transit - Scheduled to begin operations in late 2009, the Canada Line rapid transit service will connect downtown Vancouver, the city of Richmond and YVR.

• Link Building - Joining the International and Domestic terminals, the $117 million CAD Link Building will provide increased check-in capacity, passenger screening, enhanced baggage systems and office space when completed in summer 2007. The five-storey building will also be the connection point to YVR's Canada Line station via a covered walkway. The building's design will complement the existing architecture and feature Northwest Coast native art.

• Other additions - C-Pier, part of the Domestic terminal, will be upgraded and expanded to include new security systems and a new taxiway. New stores and restaurants will be added in both the Domestic and International terminals, and passengers will also benefit from upgrades such as baggage systems and parking enhancements.

A LANDMARK RENOVATION

Located on Robson Street in the centre of Vancouver's downtown area, the Empire Landmark Hotel is currently undergoing renovation of all 357 of their guestrooms. A modern grey and cream colour scheme is being introduced through new linens, furniture, carpeting and paint. The colour scheme is also being introduced into hallways throughout the property. Upgrading of the first 100 rooms was completed over this past winter, with another 100 rooms scheduled for upgrades during the upcoming winter months. Completion is expected by spring 2008.

MEETINGS ON THE FLY

The Delta Vancouver Airport Hotel has recently completed the remodeling of all of their top floor meeting rooms and public spaces. As well as the areas receiving new carpet and fresh paint, the renovation has resulted in the introduction of a new meeting space, the de Havilland room. The new room is 525 sq.ft and can accommodate 40 people in theatre-style set-up. Like all of the meeting rooms on the top floor of the hotel, the de Havilland room boasts spectacular views over the Fraser River and the mountains. The Delta Vancouver Airport Hotel has also recently introduced high-speed internet access into all guest rooms, opened a new business centre, renovated their health club, and introduced a second floor of deluxe rooms to the property.

QANTAS ADDS WINTER DATES TO ROUTE

Disco Fever Overwhelms Guests

Three hundred guests of Bosa Development Corporation were recently exposed to an authentic case of Saturday Night Fever in downtown Vancouver. Vancouver's world famous Commodore Ballroom, a classic venue well known for it's rich live musical history, was the perfect choice for this 'boogie night' straight out of the 1970's.

Produced and supervised by MVKA Productions (www.mvka.com), the evening featured disco-era pop culture themes. Greeters on stilts (wearing 70's themed outfits) met the guests on Granville Street, who were literally shown the red carpet treatment upon entering the Commodore. Go-Go Dancers, totally groovy leopard-print furniture, 9 foot tall glowing bubble towers, lava lamps and an awesome mirror ball chandelier all helped to set the scene. A state-of-the-art programmable L.E.D. light curtain provided a perfectly stunning rock'n'roll backdrop.

Entertainment included live international acts. First up was the amazing performance-artist painter Michael Israel, who wowed the crowd while creating 3 of his signature portraits. Marquee musical guests were world renowned ABBA impersonators Bjorn Again. Elvis left the building around 1:30 am, after a terrific set by local Elvis impersonator, Elvis Gold and the talented band, March Hare.
