Campbell River, BC (population 25,000) is on the eastern shore of Vancouver Island about halfway between the north and south tips, 180 air km (112 miles) northwest of Vancouver across the Strait of Georgia. By air, is approximately 50 minutes on air service scheduled four times daily. By vehicle, Campbell River is about four hours from Vancouver, including the ferry trip to Nanaimo, and the 140 km (87 mile) drive between Nanaimo and Campbell River. Its climate is the same as Vancouver with slightly less precipitation. Forestry and mining are mainstays of the local economy, and to a lesser extent, commercial fishing.   Things to do: Campbell River is called the 'Salmon Capital of the World."
