PATA Strategic Intelligence Centre WorldWatch
PATA Strategic Intelligence Centre has just released the Quarterly Statistical Report (QSR) for first quarter 2003, a detailed account of arrivals and departure statistics to and from a number of key Asia Pacific destinations (see previous item). Key inbound developments show how well PATA region destinations were performing before the worst effects of SARS and the Iraq War disrupted travel patterns:
There were significant percentage increases to most South Asia destinations, particularly to Sri Lanka (29.5%) and India (12.4%).
Total border crossings into China (PRC) continued to expand to almost 23 million during the quarter.
Hong Kong saw arrivals growth of almost 20% while Chinese Taipei (12.7%) and Macau (12.1%) also grew.
Thailand and the Philippines both reported positive gains for the quarter.
In the Pacific, the Cook Islands (18.5%) and the Northern Mariana Islands (14.5%) saw double-digit inbound growth.
On the outbound side, the QSR provides figures for 12 main generating markets within Asia Pacific, including the volume providers of Canada, the USA, Hong Kong, Chinese Taipei, Japan and Korea (ROK). For more information on the QSR, please contact PATA Coordinator-Publications, Ms. Patcharin Hongprapat. Tel: (66-2) 658-2000 ext. 121. Fax: (66-2) 658-2010. PATA Recommends the Green Map
The Green Map of Thailand's National Parks reproduces satellite images of natural vegetation to show the location of national parks and to illustrate the extent of deforestation and cultivation across the whole country. The map is especially useful to eco- and adventure tourists as it includes a unique user reply system for recommending activities and places. Thailand's major roads, railroads and urban centres also feature on the map. Revenue from the sale of the map contributes to the development of the Green Map Education Project Office at the Mekong Environment & Resource Institute. Project Eco publishes the map under agreement with the Green Map System (www.greenmap.org). Those interested in offering the Green Map to their customers may purchase the map from PATA. The minimum order is US$25 for five Green Maps. For information or to order, contact PATA Coordinator-Publications, Ms. Patcharin Hongprapat. Tel: (66-2) 658-2000 ext. 121. Fax: (66-2) 658-2010. Destination Jeju 2004: Korean Cuisine
The 53rd PATA Annual Conference will take place on Jeju, Korea (ROK), April 18-22, 2004. The uniqueness of the destinationâs natural resources and island culture expresses itself in the local cuisine:
The Jeju okdom fish has reddish skin, translucent eyes and white tail fins. Savoured as a nutritious and flavourful fish, it is usually served fresh or dried. Travellers should purchase it dried.
Jut-gal is a salted fish product recommended as a side dish with steamed rice. Hanchi-jut (salted cuttlefish), sora-jut (salted turbo), obunjagi-jut and songge-jut (salted sea urchin) are all well known, but the best and most expensive jut-gal of them all is ke-u-jut (salted abalone intestines).
A traditional food unique to Jeju is quong-yut; a syrup-like taffy made from the Jeju pheasant. Rich in protein, it reputedly delays ageing and relieves back pain. It is very good on bread or straight from the jar.
The pyogo (shitake mushrooms) found in the Mt. Halla region, 700 metres above sea level, are famous for their aroma and flavour. Beautifully presented boxes of the mushrooms are often given as gifts.
For more Jeju information, visit the provincial government's highly informative Web site at <http://pata.1stnews.net/oemp/public/redir.php?url=http%3A%2F%2F210.104.87.69%2Fn_eng%2FJeju_Main%2Fmenu%2Findex.asp&aid=390&ceid=394878>http://210.104.87.69/n_eng/Jeju_Main/menu/index.asp.
Van Riel to Photograph Jeju 2004
Acclaimed Dutch photographer, Mr. Paul van Riel, will be the official photographer for 2004 PATA Annual Conference in Jeju Korea (ROK). Mr. van Riel has a long-standing relationship with PATA and Korea. Presently his exhibition of Korean photography, The Hiddink Effect, is on show at the National Museum of Ethnology in Leiden, Holland. Between 1974 and 1990 he photographed over 1,000 Prêt-a-Porter and Haute Couture fashion shows and related events in Paris and Milan for international publications. Mr. van Riel now specialises in Korean and Japanese subjects. He hopes to secure additional pre- and post-Jeju Conference assignments before coming to Korea.
