The Tourism Industry Association of Canada (TIAC) was founded in 1931 to encourage the development of tourism in Canada.

Today, it serves as the national advocacy body for this $50 billion sector, representing the interests of the tourism business community nationwide.

Through partnerships with Provincial and Territorial tourism organizations, as well as the US-based National Tour Association (NTA),

TIAC's lobbying efforts focus on the removal of restrictive legislative and regulatory barriers to the growth and cultivation of the Canadian tourism industry.

Canada's tourism industry has been enjoying unprecedented success. Among the reasons for the country's achievements - aside from its unique and plentiful attributes as a destination - have been strong marketing efforts through well-financed government and industry partnerships, a favourable exchange rate and a cohesive national association of tourism businesses that is growing increasingly larger and more effective as the voice of the industry.

TIAC has been focusing on building a strong membership base from all sectors of the industry, while advocating for some of the more difficult and often complex issues affecting the development and profitability of tourism. Such issues are:

Further investment in Canada's national highway system;

Eliminating administrative and legislative tax policies that put certain sectors at a competitive disadvantage vis-à-vis other sectors within the tourism industry;

Customs and immigration issues that congest the Canada/US border.

In addition, TIAC is in its third year of managing Rendez-vous Canada (RVC), the nation's premier annual tourism industry marketplace. RVC 2001 will be held at the Metro Convention Centre in Toronto, Ontario, from May 12-16.

TIAC looks forward to working with the Canadian tourism industry to build on its achievements for the betterment not only of the tourism industry, but also Canadians and Canada.

VISION

The Tourism Industry Association of Canada is the leading national private- sector advocate for policies and programs that enhance the viability and sustainability of Canada's tourism industry.

MISSION

The Tourism Industry Association of Canada's mission is to forge consensus and action on major tourism issues and foster effective communications within the tourism industry and with government.

OBJECTIVES

Establish a level of awareness within governments and other constituencies of the economic and social benefits of tourism.

Develop, communicate and support tourism industry positions on key public issues, with emphasis on the national level.

Maintain a strong and broad industry base for representation.

Be Canada's recognized industry authority on national tourism issues.
