BC Rail's Whistler Northwind: Howe Sound, Fraser Canyon, Cariboo Country and Prince George (not in service at the moment)

BC rail sceneThe Whistler Northwind shows promise of becoming a very popular option for those of us who get white knuckle syndrome from driving the Sea to Sky Highway in winter. Interior views of the newly refurbished vintage passenger cars and scenic dome on the following page. BC Rail currently provides passenger transportation from the station near our former home on Pemberton Avenue in North Vancouver to the Northern BC city of Prince George via the popular Cariboo Prospector train. The company operates a fleet of self-propelled, air-conditioned Budd cars.

Canada's NEWEST Tour Train, The WHISTLER NORTHWIND, Introduces 3-DAY SOUTHBOUND ITINERARY
BC Rail has announced the 2002 schedule for its premier rail service, the Whistler Northwind, a luxurious rail cruise. The 2002 schedule runs from May 19 to October 5 and now features three-day, two-night journeys northbound and southbound. An additional day has been added to the southbound tour from last year, so both itineraries now include overnight accommodations in 100 Mile House and world-renowned Whistler Resort and either begin or conclude in Prince George or North Vancouver, BC.

Whistler Northwind northbound departures are every Sunday from North Vancouver and southbound departures are every Wednesday from Prince George. Guests travel through the diverse landscapes BC offers, riding along the edge of the Pacific Ocean's Burrard Inlet, through the mountain peaks of the Cheakamus, along the historical gold rush route, and across the plains of BC's cowboy country.

Whistler Northwind 2002 rates start with Panorama Service beginning at $945.00 Cdn. (approximately $630.00 U.S) and features all-dome seating, at-seat dining and moderate hotel accommodations.  For Summit Service, the train's highest level of service, rates begin at $1,215.00 Cdn. (approximately $810.00 U.S.) offering all-dome seating, fine dining in a vintage dining car, and the best hotel accommodation available. All rates are per person, based on double occupancy and do not include GST.

The Whistler Northwind is positioned as the "ultimate rail experience through Canada's spectacular West." Launched in the spring of 2001 passengers ride in spacious, comfortable seats, in new all-dome passenger coaches. The remainder of the consist is made up of tastefully restored and refurbished vintage cars, including a 1939, stainless steel, round-end lounge car.

Summer Fun
An additional summer train, the Whistler Explorer between Whistler and Kelly Lake is used extensively by tour groups from overseas and the United States. BC Rail also operates the popular Royal Hudson steam train excursion from North Vancouver to Squamish between June and September. It is truly a classic piece of machinery, definitely one of the most photographed trains in Canada. I look forward to its friendly whistle tooting its greeting as this historic train passes by my favourite summer time haunt at West Vancouver's Dundarave Beach. We never miss a chance to wave hello to the passengers and crew.
