The
Canada Line! Seamless Rapid Rail from Vancouver
International Airport to the BC-Alaska Cruise
Terminal at Waterfront Station The Canada
Line, or Richmond-Airport-Vancouver (RAV) rapid
transit, may not be in service for the 2010 Winter
Olympics, but in our opinion it is an idea whose
time has come. According to plan, the RAV Line's
first section will run in a tunnel from downtown
Vancouver, south under Cambie Street to beyond 41st
Avenue. November 30, 2009 is projected as opening
date, which would be in time for the 2010 Winter
Olympics. Financing of the new line required both
Federal and Provincial participation, which seems
to be in hand, although the project is still a
political football.TransLink has agreed to name the
new system the "Canada Line" as part of its
agreement with the federal government. Bombardier
Inc., builder of Vancouver's initial SkyTrain
system, AMEC, from the U.K. and Bouyges Travaux
Publics and Alstom Transport from France, Fluor
Canada, Siemens Canada, First Transit Inc.,
SNC-Lavalin and Serco Limited are possible
participants in the development. Winning bidders
will be announced at the end of April,
2004. Via Rail Canada and BC
Tour Company interested in launching Rail Excursion
Train to Whistler. (story to come)
