Chasing Lewis and Clark in
a "flying green canoe" is the topic
for
third lecture in the
Florida Air Museum's Aviation Expressions
series
SUN 'N FUN
CAMPUS, LAKELAND, Fla. &endash; (December 28, 2006)
&endash; In 2003, pilot and photographer Ron Lowery
(along with author and co-pilot Mary Walker) began
a 14,000 mile journey in Ron's kit-built airplane
retracing and photographing the route of Lewis and
Clark. From an open cockpit about the width of a
canoe, they spent three months following a watery
river highway across the country, landing on Indian
reservations and ranchers' grass
strips.
Lowery's presentation includes photographs from
their adventure that provide a captivating view of
our country's magnificent landscape&emdash;a view
that cannot be seen from an interstate or the
window of an airliner. A behind the scenes video
details preparations for the trip, from the
construction of the plane to creative and
logistical challenges and shows what life was like
along the trail.
"I built this
plane for two reasons&endash;first for photography,
second for exploring," says Lowery. "For the past
three months, I have flown over landscapes that
never repeated but evolved like the view through a
kaleidoscope."
Whether you are
interested in history, aviation, photography,
travel or just enjoy a good adventure from the
comfort of a chair, this multi-media presentation
of their 3-month photographic odyssey will allow
you to board their "flying green canoe" and join
them on their journey.
Mr. Lowery will answer photographic, aviation and
travel questions about the Lewis and Clark trip and
how others can plan their own version of retracing
the journey. The audio-visual presentation is based
on his book detailing their adventure, Chasing
Lewis & Clark Across America: A 21st Century
Aviation Adventure.
Chasing Lewis & Clark Across America is Lowery
and Walker's aerial salute to the courageous
expedition of the Corps of Discovery during the
200th Anniversary of the epic journey. Their story
and visual feast of photographs&endash;with its
rich blend of American history, art, culture and a
touch of romance&endash;will nourish your patriotic
soul.
Lowery will
present his Aviation Expressions Lecture at the
Florida Air Museum at Sun 'n Fun on January 19,
2007 at 7:00 pm, with refreshments served at 6:00
pm. General admission is $12.00, $8.00 for
Florida Air Museum Members, $6.00 for students,
free for ages 12 and under. To reach the Sun
'n Fun Campus, drive-in traffic should use County
Line Road to West Pipkin. Fly-in traffic
should request taxi to Sun 'n Fun after touchdown
at Lakeland Linder Regional Airport.
Sun 'n Fun, a 501(c)(3)
not&endash;for&endash;profit organization based in
Lakeland, Florida, is best known for its annual
Fly&endash; In held each April. The event
draws more than 160,000 people and 4,000 aircraft
to Lakeland Linder Regional Airport, creating an
economic impact of more than $27 million in
Lakeland and Polk County. The
Fly&endash; In is the primary source of funding for
Sun 'n Fun's expanding year&endash;round aviation
education programs. These include operation
of the Florida Air Museum, the state's "Official
Aviation Museum and Education Center," which is
also supported through grants from the Division of
Historical Resources and Division of Cultural
Affairs, Florida Department of State.
In addition, Sun 'n Fun has initiated education
programs for aviation enthusiasts of all ages
&endash; especially young people &endash; featuring
valuable "hands on" learning experiences. A
growing scholarship program provides financial
support to ensure Sun 'n Fun's education programs
are accessible to all. For more information,
