News from the World Tourism Organization
WTO Secretary-General to visit the Caucasian Region Madrid, 30 August 2002 - The Secretary-General of WTO Mr. Francesco Frangialli will pay official visits to the Republic of Armenia (from 8 to 10 September 2002) and to the Azerbaijan Republic (from 11 to 13 September 2002), on the invitation of the governments of those countries, which are both members of WTO. In Armenia, the Secretary-General is scheduled to meet the country's top officials. He will also tour Armenia's most important natural and heritage sites close to the country's capital, Yerevan: the Zvarnots and Garni Temples, the Geghard Monastery and Lake Sevan. In Azerbaijan, besides meeting the country's highest authorities, the WTO Secretary-General will tour heritage attractions located in the historic towns of Sheki, Ismailli, Shamakhi and Agsu.
In both countries, Mr. Frangialli is scheduled to meet the UNDP resident representatives to discuss technical cooperation in favour of tourism development in Armenia and Azerbaijan. The Secretary-General will transit from Armenia to Azerbaijan through Georgia, another member of the Organization. Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia are keen to develop sustainable tourism based on their significant natural and man-made tourism resources. Their location on the Silk Road makes them enticing cultural destinations, and their active membership of the World Tourism Organization serves as a useful tool for promoting their tourism assets in the global market. WTO is convinced that this region of the world has great tourism potential and will do all it can to assist the countries concerned in developing sustainable tourism for the benefit of local populations. WTO on this site On behalf of the Secretary-General of the World Tourism Organization and the governments of the Republic of Korea and Japan, I would like to invite you to attend the first WTO General Assembly of the 21st century--to be held in Seoul from September 23-27 and Osaka from September 28-October 1. WTO's General Assembly takes place every two years and attracts 800-1,000 of the world's top tourism officials and decision-makers from the private sector. This is the first time ever that the duty of hosting the event has been shared by two countries and the governments of South Korea and Japan see it as a dry run in preparation for their joint hosting of the World Cup of football next year. In addition to the opportunity to interview dozens of tourism ministers from around the world, this year's General Assembly includes a series of special events that should provide ample newsworthy material for your publication. o The Millennium Conference of Tourism Leaders will examine how the international tourism market is growing and changing, as well as the problems it faces&emdash;including environmental protection, conservation of cultural heritage and the impact of new technologies. o The Round Table on Tourism, Leisure and Sport will explore how the Olympic Games and other mega events can be used to develop and promote tourism. o A plan for implementation of WTO's Global Code of Ethics for Tourism will be decided with the possible creation of the World Committee on Tourism Ethics to enforce the code. Please look over the provisional programme below and send back the attached accreditation form. Journalists are eligible for the same discounts on hotels and air transport as all other delegates. Full details can be found on our website (www.world-tourism.org). I hope you will be able to join us in September. Warmest Regards, Deborah Luhrman Director of Communications
