Calgary's
Hyatt Regency, Vancouver's Westin Hotels and more
doors of hospitality
by
Jerry W. Bird
Having
worked in the Calgary media world for almost 2
decades, we share the city's pride in attracting a
great name in hoteldom. That's why we were pleased
to receive a news release from FWJ, Hyatt's Alberta
public relations firm (my old Alma Mater)
announcing that Hyatt Regency Calgary Hotel opened
its doors for business. Adjacent to the new Telus
Convention Centre, Hyatt Regency Calgary Hotel
opened in time to welcome visitors to Calgary
during the World Petroleum Congress and the Calgary
Exhibition and Stampede. Located in the heart of
downtown Calgary, the new 355-room hotel is part of
a redeveloped city block, which includes
restoration of several heritage buildings. Features
characteristic of the adjacent heritage buildings
are part of the hotel's unique architecture,
including sandstone and signature roof profiles,
window patterns and other exterior features. The
21-story Hyatt Regency Calgary Hotel offers Regency
Club. The hotel also features a 165-seat
restaurant, lounge, swimming pool and health club.
More than 25,000 square feet of meeting and
function space will be available for business and
social functions.

Westin
Grand Vancouver: Diamonds are Forever
We had the
opportunity of attending an anniversary celebration
at teh Grand and met their new head chef. The
Westin Grand is an all-suite hotel in the heart of
Vancouver's entertainment district, next to Library
Square. Our host, has much reason to be proud - his
hotel reached an impressive milestone, receiving
the Four-Diamond designation by the American
Automobile Association/ Canadian Automobile
Association (AAA/CAA). It joined select company as
one of only nine four-diamond properties in
Vancouver. "These accomplishments represent the
Westin Grand, Vancouver's obsession with customer
satisfaction, and its commitment to building its
business one customer at a time, " said
Darling.
This was as the
first hotel that Westin franchised, plus the first
urban Strata-Titled Hotel offering in Canada. Three
years later, it had already ranked Best in Class
out of 110 City Centre Westin Hotels worldwide. The
survey of 431 Westin North American Business Hotels
also ranked the Westin Grand, Vancouver Number 1 in
cleanliness and maintenance of guest rooms, Number
1 in cleanliness and maintenance of overall hotel
and Number 1 in problem resolution. Recently, the
Westin Grand, Vancouver affirmed its commitment to
its corporate and high tech clientele by becoming
the first hotel in Canada to offer guests three
convenient high-speed Internet access options in
all guests suites, plus a Internet option in all
six meeting rooms. Contact: Toll-free 888 -

New
Westin Bayshore Resort Hotel and Fabulous
Seawall
We had the privilege of being invited along with
the who's who of Vancouver, to help the Westin
Bayshore Hotel & Resort celebrate its official
reopening. Staged in early June, after a multi
million dollar renovation for the new millennium,
it was truly a gala event. Photos and further
comments to come. As a follow-up, we celebrated
Fathers Day with a seafood dinner at the newly
opened Seawall Bar & Bistro, which
stands on the site of the former Trader Vics. Even
more than its famous predecessor, the Seawall
offers one of the world's most breathtaking
panoramas; Coal Harbour Marina and Stanley Park,
Alaska Cruise ships pulling into dock at Canada
Place, float planes and helijets taking off, and a
splendid new waterfront that looks like it just
came out of the gift box. By the way, the service
and seafood were superb.
The Bayshore has been one of my favourites for
decades and now there's even more reason to select
and recommends this great inner city resort hotel.
